I think the Rainbow Machine is hilarious! Joe (Trohman) bought it, but I ended up hijacking it and writing a part with it pretty much immediately. “I love pretty much everything they make. How are you finding the pair of pedals you use? Are they voiced particularly well for bass? While we’re on the brand specific stuff… EarthQuaker Devices are a relatively new name in the market place. That’d be my desert island distortion pedal (if the rest of my gear and electricity happened to be there as well).” I’d told Ryan what distortion I was using and he’d claimed he could beef it up and he did just that. As you seem to be a leading authority on their range, is there a stand out FUZZROCIOUS pedal for you?.I’m super happy with everything I’ve gotten from the Ratajski’s. What is it about their stuff that does it for you? The sound? The people? I understand there are plenty of FUZZROCIOUS pedals in your full collection.EarthQuaker Devices Disaster Transport Jr.Pedals: As of today (could be different tomorrow)… Since I’m lefty pretty much all of my basses are custom.Īmps: I just got a Scarlett Bass 200, and I’m also using an Acoustic B600H (super-cheap and sounds awesome). “Bass: Either EGC 500, Sandberg California P, or FGN P-style. What is your current live/studio set up (bass, amp & those all important effects)?.It’s cool to have super-lows and all that jazz, but is it musical?” If you had to put it in words, how would you describe your live sound?.Nick Thieneman and Brian Cook are two guys whose sound I love currently.” Unless I’m playing something sort of precious, I feel naked without the gain. That led me to Cop Shoot Cop, The Jesus Lizard, Unsane, and bands of that ilk. I was really into some of the sounds David J. “I started playing bass in bands in 1994, so it’s been about 20 years. How long have you been playing bass & when did the love affair with distortion begin?.Josh uses and endorses DiMarzio, D’Addario, EGC, FGN, Fuzzrocious, & Sandberg. So, after some discussion & back-and-forth questioning, here is what Josh has to say about his gear, his tone and his love of effects.Ĭheck out the acts that Josh is currently performing and writing with: To date he is the only person I’ve interviewed that has insisted on me asking more questions. Josh is also a self-confessed gear nerd who loves to experiment with pedals and talk about gear. His love of huge, driven bass tones is present in all that he does and not only has he amassed a substantial collection of these pedals, he’s put them to work on many recordings and at all of his live shows. Josh has likely tried more distortion, overdrive and fuzz pedals, though more heavily driven bass heads than most of us can imagine.

While his bass career covers the far corners of the rock, metal and prog’ genres, there is one characteristic always present in Josh’s tone, one thing that makes you think ‘that sounds like Newton!’ - Dirt… A s**t load of dirt! The musician’s that he’s played/plays along side include members of Fall Out Boy and Anthrax to name but a few. Josh is a bass (and guitar!) heavy weight, having played for more bands on the US rock and metal scene than I can keep track of.
